If you are looking for ways to support your local Black community, start with ordering from Black-owned restaurants and food services. Though some of these businesses are catering companies or may have limited hours and small delivery radiuses because of the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still reach out to these businesses and show your support. Due to the dramatic decrease in income that has affected restaurants globally on account of the pandemic, ordering food, purchasing merchandise or buying gift cards for future use is greatly appreciated by restaurant owners.
Chef Jamie Beeston, owner of Toronto-based catering company Barbacoa Boyz.
The spots mentioned below produce some of the tastiest plates in the city. With a unique blend of spices and dishes from all over the globe, these restaurants represent traditional cuisine from countries like Ethiopia, Nigeria, Haiti, Ghana and Jamaica -- to name a few. Some of these business owners also put contemporary twists on dishes by creating fusion fare that is just divine! From delicious vegan food, organic juices and quality coffee, check out how your local Black restaurant owners have been serving the community.
Jerome Robinson, owner and chef of recently opened restaurant, The Heartbreak Chef.
These hardworking, passionate restaurant owners care deeply for the communities that stand behind them to make operation successful. In the past, TasteToronto has had the opportunity to speak directly with some local Black restaurant owners concerning their personal stories about the journey of opening a business and the successes and struggles along the way. Recently, we covered the opening of Parkdale fried chicken joint The Heartbreak Chef by Jerome Robinson and SugarKane co-owner Nicole Charles-Page.
Nicole, Renée and Donna, sisters and co-owners of SugarKane Restaurant.
Now, more than ever, as the world reignites the movement against racism, awareness is spreading on the discrimination black people face in their daily lives and the systemic racism that is very much still ingrained in our society. People of the GTA and surrounding cities can take a step forward and support this movement by showing support for black restaurant/business owners.
