If you long to be somewhere tropical this summer, the next best thing might be biting into a Geladona freezie. Inspired by Brazil -- a country known, among other things, for its joyous street parties, lush beaches and minimalist swimwear -- these frozen treats are bringing the sultry essence of the tropics to Toronto.
Launched in May 2020, Geladona took shape when the pandemic put a stop to founder and co-owner Mariana Palhares’ regular work as a musician and event planner. Forced to focus on something new, Palhares began making freezies inspired by home. The flavours, from fruit-forward to dreamily creamy, are a world away from the syrupy, artificial tastes found in more ubiquitous brands.
Created in partnership with Florenca Bortolacci, the menu brings the Brazilian expats’ favourite flavours to Toronto. Offerings run the gamut from fruity and tropical, such as passion fruit, guava, soursop and pineapple with mint, to richer items, like coconut with condensed milk, Nutella with powdered milk, Oreo and more.
Made with fresh, simple ingredients, Geladona has both water- and milk-based flavours, along with some freezies made without added sugar. Currently for sale at Padaria, at 5 Manor Rd., and Rui Gomes Food Market, at 546 Rogers Rd., the freezies are also available for delivery in the GTA. The Geladona freezie bike will also be doing pop-ups this summer, with details announced on the company’s Instagram.
Avoid disappointment by ordering ahead of heat waves. Whichever flavour you choose, these refreshing, nostalgic treats capture the essence of summer and are sure to become a staple when scorchers set in.
