Two weeks after announcing that it was closing due to COVID-19, Don Alfonso 1890, an award-winning Italian restaurant in the downtown core, surprised fans with news of a pop-up coming this fall.
Owned by Liberty Entertainment Group and created by Michelin-starred chefs Alfonso and Ernesto Iaccarino, Don Alfonso 1890 was one of Toronto's most sought-after reservations. Inspired by their restaurant of the same name on the Amalfi coast, the Iaccarinos built a high-end, intimate dining spot serving classic Italian flavours with a modern, Canadian bent.
Thanks to the community's overwhelming support, the Don Alfonso team has organized a pop-up at Casa Loma starting September 16. The 60-seat dinners will take place in the conservatory of the historic landmark and will feature classic and vegetarian iterations of the restaurant's tasting menus. Reservations for the limited-run pop-up are already available via OpenTable.
In early August, when the restaurant's closure was first announced, Nick Di Donato, CEO and president of Liberty Entertainment Group, said in a message posted to Instagram that the team was "actively looking for a new location to reopen." The restaurant's new home has yet to be revealed, yet Di Donato recently confirmed on Instagram that Liberty Entertainment Group was "creating a permanent space for summer 2021."
In the meantime, reserve early for what is promised to be a spectacularly elegant Michelin-caliber night to remember.
