Don Alfonso 1890 reveals stunning new Toronto home

In news guaranteed to delight Italophiles, fine-dining enthusiasts and those who love a happy ending, Don Alfonso 1890 has recently revealed its dazzling, new Toronto home. Now open at the Westin Harbour Castle, the only North American location of the Michelin-starred eatery is flaunting a magnificent look and the type of modern, Amalfi-inspired cuisine it’s been recognized for since day one.

A family-owned business since the 19th century, Don Alfonso 1890 originated in a town named Sant Agata, in the Campania region of Italy. Recognized for its innovative approach to traditional cuisine, made famous by chefs Alfonso and Ernesto Iaccarino, Don Alfonso 1890 has garnered worldwide acclaim. Today, the restaurant can be found in Italy, Helena Bay, New Zealand, Macau, China, and, once again, in Toronto.

Opened here in 2018, Don Alfonso 1890’s original location was in the former home of Rosewater Supper Club, in the historic Consumer’s Gas Company Building on Toronto Street. A victim of pandemic closures, the concept found a temporary home in historic Casa Loma in 2021. Created in partnership with Nick Di Donato, CEO of Liberty Entertainment Group, the restaurant’s upscale fare combined with the grandiose surroundings to create an immensely popular pop-up.

Still, for a restaurant recently named the best Italian restaurant in the world outside of Italy (by 50 Top Italy), and one of Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants, something more permanent was needed. The 38th floor of The Westin Harbour Castle, with its waterfront location and long-established history in the city, proved the perfect spot. “Words cannot express our excitement to unveil the next incarnation of Don Alfonso, in its new home with unparalleled views of the city and lake,” affirmed Nick Di Donato, in a press release.

"The new Don Alfonso space on the 38th floor of the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel is airy, elegant and modern in design," says designer Nadia Di Donato. "It's not just the visual effect of the city and water view that greets one's eyes upon entering, it's the wealth of small details that keep one riveted." With room for 90, the restaurant is cozy yet spacious. A cool colour palette and clean lines serve as a blank canvas for the kitchen's remarkable plates. The only distractions? Contemporary art -- including pieces by Damien Hirst and Mr. Brainwash -- fresh flower arrangements and the room's spectacular views may vie for diners' attention.

At the table, guests will find the Michelin experience they’ve grown to love: each dish tenderly composed from the finest, freshest local and organic fare, then served on one-of-a-kind dishes created exclusively for the restaurant. Inspired by the Mediterranean, dishes on the à la carte and tasting menus highlight the beauty of Italy and the mastery of those in the kitchen. “My team and I are thrilled to be in our exquisite new kitchen and look forward to offering the award-winning experience we have been recognized for,” says chef Daniele Corona. “I’m honoured to showcase the Don Alfonso tradition with our carefully curated local and organic ingredients in such a magical and unforgettable space.”

Don Alfonso 1890 is now open for dinner, Wednesday to Sunday. To book your table, visit their website.
