Once a year, Krispy Kreme celebrates National Doughnut Day on June 5, by handing out free doughnuts to customers who are willing to wait in line. Customers can get any doughnut of their choosing at participating locations.
This year, Krispy Kreme has decided to extend National Doughnut Day to a week. From June 1 to June 5, customers can visit participating locations across Canada and get their doughnut fix. With social distancing rules still in place in Toronto and in most cities across Canada and the US, it is crucial that people still maintain their distance in lines and be respectful of personal space while participating.
On their website they write, "For months, the concept of time and days has been a blur. That’s why this year, we’re changing National Doughnut Day to National Doughnut Week! That’s right, you get to choose not only your doughnut, but the day to enjoy it. Stop by your local shop any day Monday to Friday next week to celebrate National Doughnut Week and your favourite doughnut is on us. Any Day. Any Doughnut Free."
So far, throughout the pandemic, Krispy Kreme locations have remained open for takeout, with drive-thru locations in particular, being extremely busy to say the least -- with wait times as long as 3 hours.
Videos and pictures of drive-thru lines that wrap around parking lots have surfaced on Instagram and Twitter. Clearly, people miss their doughnuts and are willing to wait ungodly long wait times to get them.
The company should expect a high turnout rate the week of promotion and should be ready to handle crowds. Torontonians are excited for five whole days of free doughnuts but the hope is that safety is not compromised at locations that do not have a drive-thru, which allow for distancing in cars.
