Now that we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the holiday season is over, the next logical step in most people's New Year's resolutions is likely a full-body detox followed by a visit to your healer to align your chakras.
If you've opted to attempt dry January or simply forgo consuming alcohol any day of the year, Temperance Cocktails recently joined forces with Masterchef winner and sober chef Jennifer Crawford to promote the mandate and menu of the project.
Launched in 2018 by Haritha Gnanaratna and his partner Audra Williams, Temperance Cocktails has headlined their products at events for the Centre for Social Innovation and the Toronto Queer Film Fest. The branding is fluid and consistent, mindfully crafting ingredients to play on cards in the Tarot deck. Brews like "The Empress" are described as "mild floral and red fruit sweetness, with a dry finish and aroma of roses" made from hibiscus, rosebud and blackcurrant.
Temperance Cocktails goes above and beyond the restaurant setting to keep products accessible through home deliveries, cocktail-making workshops and team-building parties. Trending initiatives like Not 9 to 5 and Zero Proof Nation uphold positive messages of inclusivity and well-being that make these values easy to get behind.
As a sober chef, Crawford looks for the creativity and inspiration behind all non-alcoholic beverages and how they can be concocted to enhance food. Handing someone a cranberry soda to compensate for a wine pairing won't cut it anymore.
This past fall, Crawford has been instrumental in spreading the word by writing the forward to Temperance's new book, interviewing and hosting a Kickstarter reward food-and-drink pairing night. Jennifer Crawford's massive social media following, coupled with their magnetic energy and culinary prowess helped Temperance Cocktails achieve their start-up dreams.
