Popular Toronto bakery announces closure

For the past 11 years, whether you wanted a spectacular wedding cake, celebrity-themed sugar cookie, picture-perfect birthday confection or other treat, Little Italy's Bake Shoppe has been one of the most popular places in the city to go. Sadly, in news that's sure to upset any sweet-toothed local, Bake Shoppe has announced it will be closing at the end of the month.

Bake Shoppe

Opened by sisters Cindy and Sarah Coelho in 2009, the bakery on College Street was originally known as the Wedding Cake Shoppe. In 2014, the sisters rebranded and opened the Bake Shoppe, offering more options, such as homemade pop tarts, pecan bars, Ruffles marshmallow squares and more, for those looking for grab-and-go sweets and smaller indulgences. Since then, the bakery's buttercream-covered birthday cakes have become some of the city's most popular.

"After much thought and reflection," reads a message posted to the store's Instagram this week, "I have decided it's the right time to end our chapter here on College Street at the end of the month." Store hours have been extended until September 26, the shop's final day, to give customers the opportunity to enjoy as many treats as possible over the next few weeks.

"Please don't be too sad," continues the post. "Because we're working on a few things and over the next couple of weeks, we will have some very exciting announcements coming your way!"

For now, we recommend you stock up on as many Bake Shoppe @ Home frozen products and best-selling Ruffles marshmallow bars as you can until news breaks of the Coelho sisters' next move.
