The corner of John and Adelaide Streets is looking more festive than usual thanks to the recent opening of Piccolo Caffé E Vino’s Winter Wine Market. Gussied up for the season with an exuberant amount of tinsel, twinkling lights and holiday swag, this heated patio is where you’ll want to toast the season.

Opened in May at 111 John Street, Piccolo Caffé E Vino is a sister spot to Melrose on Adelaide, both owned and operated by Brain Donnelly. A coffee shop and snack bar, the spot doubles as a bodega and wine shop carrying a number of organic wines and spirits unavailable elsewhere.

Just as Melrose on Adelaide serves a menu of small plates with a Mediterranean feel, the menu at Piccolo Caffé E Vino features casual sharing plates meant to accompany some singular sips. From antipasto platters and truffle fries to a fried chicken sandwich or mushroom toast, there’s a plate perfect for every occasion. The restaurant also offers a popular weekend brunch, with  mimosa, Caesar and sangria kits available by the glass or for the table.

For the Winter Wine Market, the team wants, “to spread joy and welcome happiness,” says marketing team member Oren Williamson. “It’s more than just providing a warm space with great drinks. We wanted to celebrate winter and the holidays it brings. There are other markets in the city and we figured we could to create one for our community.”

The team has decked out the Piccolo patio and is putting the focus on “hot drinks, wine and having a good time,” adds Williamson. A menu of seasonal sips and bites includes coffee, hot apple cider, and oat milk hot chocolate (all with optional add-ins of whiskey, vodka, rum, Baileys, Frangelico or Tia Maria) along with Grand Marnier mulled wine. Red and white wine by the glass is also on offer. Perfect for dunking, the team will also be frying up fresh cinnamon ciambellas, or Italian donuts. A limited number of Christmas trees will be available for anyone grappling with looming shortages.

The Winter Wine Market runs Monday to Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays between 12 p.m. and 10 p.m., throughout the month of December. Pop by for a nightcap and raise a glass to the season.
