Revenge shopping requires sustenance. Fuelled by months of lockdowns and a deep desire to sport something (anything!) new, heading to any newly-reopened mall requires coffee, often alcohol and enough treats to sustain waning energies. Enter Sugarhill Desserts: located minutes from Vaughan Mills shopping mall, Sugarhill is the spot to stop when your blood sugar dips and only sweet treats will do.
Opened on July 1, at 9100 Jane Street, Sugarhill Desserts is owned and operated by Jay Patel and Dharmesh Majethiya. With more than 10 years of experience in the food industry, the team viewed COVID as the perfect time to jump into something new. “We saw an opportunity in COVID, instead of getting demotivated,” says Patel. “We decided to go ahead with this venture as we considered these tough times as an opportunity. We hope this helps and motivates others as well.”
Housed in a bright, whimsical space, Sugarhill Desserts is, first and foremost, an old-fashioned ice cream shop where everything is made by hand. Slow-batched, gelatin-free flavours include everything from chocolate and strawberry, to rose, royal saffron and more, with eggless, gluten-free and vegan options on offer. Available in scoops and pints, Sugarhill's ice creams also find their way into milkshakes, elaborate sundaes enhanced by drippy, gooey house-made sauces, and more.
Alongside the menu of creamy treats, customers can find crepes, waffles and cakes, perfect for mid-afternoon pick-me-ups, after-dinner treats or for transporting home for times when sweet teeth need sating. A lengthy list of hot and cold drinks, including teas, coffees, cappuccinos, smoothies and more, round out the menu.
Though the Vaughan shop is currently the only location of Sugarhill Desserts, the team is hoping to expand to Hamilton, London, Ottawa and more in the near future.
