One of Toronto's oldest ice cream parlours, Greg's Ice Cream, closes down its last standing location after 40 years in business. Like many popular ice cream parlours, Greg's Ice Cream used to see lines stretching around the block. Nearby U of T students and people from all over the city would line up to taste the delicious homemade ice cream from the store.
Owner Greg Mahon opened up his first store location in 1981 across from the ROM and achieved a resounding amount of success. He expanded his business and relocated to Bloor and Spadina and opened a Distillery District location on the west end of Gristmill Lane in 2012.
Mahone is the ultimate ice cream purveyor and, for years, created and sold several unique ice cream flavours. In Toronto, people like Greg Mahone piloted the ice cream scene and experimented with flavours since the 80s. He pioneered the roasted marshmallow ice cream and experimented with flavours like blueberry, orange cream, grape nut, masala chai, lime chiffon and stout. Unfortunately, Greg's Distillery location closed down in recent years, but their Annex location at 750 Spadina is the last to close. It is unclear if Greg's will reemerge in the future, but for now, we say a sad, heartfelt goodbye to a neighbourhood favourite and ice cream trailblazer.
