For fans of drippy, melty, succulent, savoury sandwiches, news that Tortería San Cosme has closed its Kensington Market location couldn’t be sadder. Opened in 2016, the casual Mexican eatery served up some of the best sandwiches in the city, along with authentic sides, drinks and sweets.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that due to present circumstances, Tortería San Cosme will be closing its doors at Kensington Market indefinitely,” reads a message on the restaurant’s website.
Closed in March, due to COVID-19-related shutdowns, San Cosme never recovered, according to chef and owner Arturo Anhalt. “The catastrophic combination of slower sales, delivery app fees, high rents and government restrictions have made it impossible for us to remain open,” said Anhalt in an interview with BlogTO.
Thankfully, the news isn’t all bad. The restaurant will continue to offer an abbreviated menu of tortas and snacks through delivery apps. According to the Tortería San Cosme website, a pop-up is also “in the works.” Details will be shared in the coming weeks on Instagram.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank our Torta fans for your following. … We’re not saying goodbye, just yet, only hasta luego!”
