DownLow Chicken Shack
A Vancouver cult favourite finally made its way east, and Toronto's been eating it up ever since. Downlow got its start back in 2015 as a late-night menu item at founders Doug Stephen and Lindsey Mann's restaurant - the chicken got so popular they joked they should keep it "on the down low." Three years later it had its own shack, and now, in 2026, its first Toronto location has landed at 538 Manning Ave.
The lineup is all about Nashville-style hot chicken done big: sandos, tenders, thighs, and popcorn nuggets, all made with hormone- and GMO-free, halal-certified chicken from local farms. Sides swing between coleslaw, crinkle-cut fries, and pickles, and the portions run generous enough that a lot of orders end up split between two people.
It's a solid fit for the neighbourhood's laid-back, independent food scene rather than a flashy destination - more your new weeknight order-in than a special-occasion spot.
