Beloved Toronto barbecue joint reopens over a year after fire

When news that beloved Earlscourt BBQ had shuttered due to a fire back in December 2019, many viewed it as a temporary setback for the popular barbecue smokehouse. When multiple insurance policy issues arose and the onset of the pandemic, it looked to be more than just a speed bump at that point.

It’s been over a year since Earlscourt had been open and some residents probably feared the worst. But, with repairs nearly complete and the kitchen set to work, it looks as though they’re back in business.

Earlscourt BBQ is most popular for their massive platters of locally sourced smoked meats like brisket, ribs, pulled pork, wings and even meatloaf. Owner Jason Rees, known as the 'Pork Ninja', won awards for his barbecue, that used to be served at the Wenona Lodge, before opening up this location in the Corso Italia neighbourhood.

Beloved Toronto Barbecue Joint Reopens

Set to reopen sometime in March, this smokehouse may look a bit different with COVID protocols in place. They’ll be serving takeout only and may transform into a small market pending lockdown closures. Whatever it looks like when it’s up and running, it will be welcomed back with open arms to the community.

The soon-to-reopen restaurant is located at 1278 St. Clair Avenue West.
