A Toronto-based baker is using her passion for making delicious homemade cinnamon buns to help a great cause.
Judy Naiberg, the heart and soul behind Bubbie's Buns, loved baking her way through the pandemic for her family, since she wasn't able to meet with many of them. She enjoyed baking, especially for her nine grandchildren with number 10 on the way. Naiberg's daughters encouraged her to sell her homemade cinnamon buns because they were so delicious, and Bubbie's Buns officially launched over social media. What Naiberg knew for sure was that she wanted to donate 100 per cent of her proceeds to SickKids Foundation.
"It was a no-brainer for me that all proceeds would be donated. The decision to support SickKids was an easy one, as I am grateful and blessed to have beautiful children and grandchildren," says Naiberg.
Like many other home businesses birthed in the pandemic, Naiberg––fuelled by boredom during the lockdowns––experimented Bubbie's as a social media store. Her three daughters handled the social media for her and while she baked.
Bubbie's Buns donates everything to the hospital and all the ingredients and boxing is paid for herself. Although her output and volume is limited since, considering she bakes alone, Naiberg says she has been overwhelmed and thankful with the response.
Naiberg wants to keep on baking and donating well past her $5,000 goal, as long as people keep ordering. At first, she thought only people she knew would support her in her initiative, however, Instagram has heightened her popularity and allowed her to reach a bigger community.
Bubbie's Buns has considered adding other flavours to their offering, but they found that the reviews on the cinnamon buns were so positive that she doesn't want to change it up just yet.
The cinnamon bun recipe has been passed down through generations and is a recipe that Naiberg's mom used in the past, and has been tweaked to add a touch of Naiberg's own flare. What makes these buns unique is their secret sauce that is the special cinnamon glaze that everyone enjoys.
