Chotto Matte's Day of the Dead celebration returns with curated menu and party

If you're looking for a chic and spooky way to celebrate the Day of the Dead, look no further than Chotto Matte Toronto. The quintessential Japanese-Peruvian restaurant on Bay Street will host the return of its Day of the Dead celebrations from October 24 to November 6 this year.

The Day of the Dead -- or el Día de los Muertos -- is traditionally a time to remember the dead and celebrate life and death, largely originating from Mexico. Chotto Matte's celebration will last nearly two weeks, with a chef-curated menu, expertly crafted cocktails and a Day of the Dead party on October 29, when the sights, sounds and flavours of this special occasion will truly come to life.

"Inspired by the renowned Latin American traditions, guests will be enthralled by a culinary journey that features dishes like Tuna Tartare, made with premium ingredients avocado, pomegranate, chive oil and truffle salsa; Scallop Tiradito, made with green apple salsa and aji sesame oil; and a special dessert for the occasion, the Immortal Flame, made with lime mousse cake, hazelnut praline, and toast white chocolate candle," describes a recent press release from Chotto Matte. The Immortal Flame's candle (pictured in the cover photo of this article) will indeed be lit when the dish is brought to the table.

Chotto Matte's Day of the Dead celebrations will feature a swath of cocktails to fill our mortal hearts, such as La Calavera, made with gin, tawny port, amontillado sherry, morello cherry, pineapple shrub, lemon and served with a decorative sugar skull; El Ramo Immortal, an “immortal bouquet” mixed with aged rum, dry vermouth, banana cordial, elderflower, lime and Peychaud bitters; and Nueva Esperanza (named after Peru’s most known cemetery), mixed with Mezcal Espadin, Chotto Matte vermouth blend and bitters.

"We’re happy to celebrate Day of the Dead once again at Chotto Matte,” says Kurt Zdesar, founder of Chotto Matte. “Especially with our Peruvian roots, we are thrilled to honour this beautiful tradition with a menu inspired by Dia de los Muertos, mixing in elements of our signature Nikkei cuisine.”

On Saturday, October 29, Chotto Matte will host a special Day of the Dead party, where guests can indulge in these gorgeous dishes and cocktails alongside a live DJ and drummer, and amid a sea of candles to celebrate Latin American traditions.
