Pinkerton's releases line of hand-crafted cocktails in a can

The warm weather has arrived and so have the Dynamite Kid Cocktails, a new line of canned adult beverages, sold exclusively at Pinkerton's.

Known for being one of the East end's most happening bars, Pinkerton's has forever been a Leslieville staple, serving up delicious finger food with a curated drink selection. Since December, owner Marc Baglio has been collaborating with his longtime friend and consultant, João Machado, to create a unique line of cocktails to-go.

When the legislation became available for restaurants to sell pre-batched cocktails for takeout, most places went with the glass mason jar approach, but with his keen eye on the cocktail scene, Machado thought the stubby little cans people were drinking out of in New York and Chicago would stand out among the rest here in Toronto.

After developing 10 to 20 different options for their first release, five lucky recipes were chosen and given their own original branding, conceptualized and illustrated by artist Kwasi Amankwah. When they first laid eyes on the cans and saw how short they were, they knew a name like Dynamite Kid would fit the bill.

"These cans may look small but they are dynamite. They're powerful," said Baglio.

The renderings on the can act as a prelude of what the drinking experience has in store. The cartoon drawings have a nostalgic, Astro Boy kind of feel, reminiscent of the shows they used to watch growing up. Dynamite Kid is a reference to the can's small stature, the kid on the can and the cartoony marketing, making the entire concept truly one of a kind.

Though many have been eyeing the Negroni and Aperol Spritz, the creators have recommended trying out some of the more distinctive options first. Machado's favourite is the Martini, with a sweeter version of dry vermouth, a vanilla undertone, Champagne vinegar and bitters.

Machado has a certain set of beliefs when it comes to a proper martini.

"It's like trying the bread at a restaurant. There is no way to hide and it defines the quality of the establishment," he said.

Baglio sings high praises of the Sherry and Tonic, as well as the French 75, two non-mainstream cocktails that deserve a little more attention for their bright and refreshing taste.

For those enjoying at home, they have been kind enough to leave the recommended serving instructions on the back of each can, so you can re-create the elevated bar experience and wow your guests. They can also be enjoyed directly from the can while soaking up the sun alongside one (or two) of their famous baos. The cocktails are individually priced, but also come in variety packs for those who won't be able to settle on just one.

The Dynamite Kid cocktails are now available on the menu at Pinkerton's, located at 1026 Gerrard Street East, where they will be serving them up on their recently opened patio. For takeout, feel free to visit the bottle shop, or place your order online through their partners at Ambassador. Be sure to keep your eyes posted on their Instagram, where they will post any news in relation to future collaborations and canned-cocktail creations.
