This Yorkville ice cream shop does 'Turkish coffee readings'

S'cream Ice Cream, located in the Yorkville neighbourhood, has brought a historical tradition from Turkey that can tell you your future with a cup of coffee.

Turkish coffee readings, or 'Tasseography,' is a fortune-telling method that interprets the pattern of coffee ground or tea leaves. The reader interprets coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup based on the symbols they see, such as a tree or bird, representing the past, present or future. These readings can be taken seriously by some and others just like to enjoy the novelty.

S'cream's owner, Elif, explained the important role of coffee in Turkish culture. They say that when a woman is getting married, they make coffee for both sides of the family and provide their fiancé with a salted coffee to prove his commitment to her––showcasing that he will accept her in any condition.

They emphasized that coffee is a staple within the Turkish culture when hosting friends and family and within their daily lives. S'cream Ice Cream decided to offer Turkish coffee readings after a request from a frequent customer who was having their coffee one day at the store.

They ended up doing a full reading session with her and she was pleased with what she heard. After realizing how engaged and interested their customers were in receiving Turkish coffee readings, they decided to offer this service permanently while also educating their customers about this beloved tradition.

S'cream takes reservations at least two days in advance for the readings and the earliest spot available is currently March 12. They offer a short trial 1-2 minutes long, which is free and for the full reading with coffee that is 20-30 minutes long is $30. If you are interested to learn more, you can DM them on Instagram.
