Bars and restaurants pivot to takeout only as Toronto and Peel move into lockdown

During the Ministry's weekly press conference, Premier Doug Ford has officially announced that Toronto and Peel region will be moving back into a full lockdown.

The new measures come at a time when Ontario is amid its second wave of the virus -- predominantly in Toronto and the surrounding GTA.

Starting Monday November 23 at 12:01 a.m. the City of Toronto and Peel Region will be going into lockdown with a new set of restrictions imposed to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Deputy Premier, Christine Elliott introduced the following measures, which have officially been approved by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa and the Public Health Measures table.

The new measures are as follows:

  • Restaurants and bars will remain closed for all dine-in service, including patio and outdoor dining. Restaurants will remain open for takeout and delivery services
  • No indoor private gatherings with anyone outside of your household
  • Outdoor gatherings limited to max 10 people
  • Non-essential businesses such as barber shops, nail salons and gyms will be closed to the public
  • Storefronts and other non-essential stores within shopping malls will remain open for only curbside pick-up, where permissible
  • Essential services will remain open with capacity limits
  • Schools and day care centres will remain open

"Despite the range of public health measures and restrictions that have been in place since early October, we've seen the situation continue to worsen in regions across the province -- particularly in hotspots like Peel and Toronto. It's clear more needs to be done to limit community transmission of COVID-19," says Deputy Premier Christine Elliott.

The ministry will be releasing further details in the coming days regarding these new COVID restrictions and public health measures.
