Find gourmet ice cream sundaes at this dive bar's new weekend pop-up

Ice cream pop-ups have been appearing all over Toronto lately as the warm weather rolls in and the newest addition to the city's growing list of ice cream spots to check out is Sundae's Best Ice Cream.

Currently operating on weekends out of Wasted Youth, this new gourmet sundae shop by Matt Calhoun only launched two weeks ago and has been met with a lot of praise.

"Ice cream has been my favourite dessert since I was a kid," Calhoun says, "Having been laid off during this pandemic, I decided that I would try and perfect and experiment with my favourite dessert and see where it could take me."

After spending the last six months testing out different recipes and flavour combinations, Calhoun secured recipes for a custard-based ice cream he's proud of. Creamy and smooth, scoops are complemented by toppings that enhance the flavour of the ice cream.

Offering three flavours of homemade ice cream with homemade toppings that will rotate throughout the summer, the current line-up is Lemon Fresh, Classy as Fudge and Le Dolce.

Lemon Fresh

Lemon Fresh is their signature flavour, made with freshly shaved lemon curd, poppy seeds and topped with a sweet blueberry compote and lemon cake crumble.

Classy as Fudge

Classy as Fudge is made with a chocolate ice cream base, topped with pieces of fudge brownies, chocolate shavings, shaved on the spot and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

The Dolce

The third flavour they're offering right now is The Dolce, which is dulce de leche topped with candied pecans, caramel sauce and mini crispy churro donuts coated in cinnamon.

Wasted Youth appears to be the new hub in the city, welcoming food pop-ups, as Sundae's Best Ice Cream is confirmed to be joined later this week by Don Chingón, a Mexican brunch pop-up that rose out of The Depanneur not too long ago. As a result of this move, look forward to a collaboration between the two pop-ups happening this summer.

Don Chingón will still remain at The Depanneur on weekends for their usual hours, with pop-ups at Wasted Youth happening throughout the week. Be sure to stay tuned to Don Chingón's Instagram for updates on what days they'll be soft launching at Wasted Youth.

Sundae's Best Ice Cream will be at Wasted Youth on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. but may extend their hours in the near future. Before finding a permanent home, Calhoun hopes to continue to collaborate and pop-up at different spots in the city over the summer, so be sure to follow Sundae's Best Ice Cream on Instagram to keep up to date with all their plans.
