The LCBO and SkipTheDishes announced on Sunday that their recent partnership to offer on-demand alcohol delivery in Toronto will be put on pause.
This comes after the backlash they received from local restaurants and bars who continue to rely on alcohol sales to keep afloat during the pandemic.
The partnership, which lasted a mere two days, was met with a flurry of criticism shortly after the announcement on December 4.
Premier Doug Ford and Finance Minister Rod Phillips revealed they asked the LCBO to halt their partnership with Skip for the time being in an effort to continue supporting small businesses and restaurants in Ontario.
“Following direction from the Ontario Government, effective end of day today, LCBO’s partnership with SkipTheDishes is paused until further notice,” the company said in a statement.
Many users on social media were adamant on pressuring the provincial government to step in following the announcement of the partnership.
The provincial government was met with warm regards in allowing restaurants to sell alcohol to make ends-meet, but many view them allowing the partnership between the LCBO and Skip as counterintuitive.
“Our restaurants are counting on us more than ever,” Ford tweeted on Sunday.
