Mexican restaurant El Charro opens sister location on the Danforth

Toronto spot El Charro opened its second location on the Danforth January 31. The new location is just down the road from the original, in the same space where Brass Taps Pizza Pub was before it closed in 2020.

“After long months of lots and lots of work, repairs, cleaning, lockdowns and weather inconveniences we are finally here,” El Charro said in a post on their Instagram.

With the new location, El Charro Danforth will offer a more spacious interior as well as a new and expanded menu. Chef Alan Mendoza from Guadalajara, Mexico, will be bringing his culinary creations to the new space. While the menu at the Broadview location focuses mostly on antojitos, street eats, the sister location’s broader menu features more sit-down meals like carne asada, served with grilled cactus and jalapenos, or shrimp sauteed in mezcal and thyme, served atop caramelized pineapple.

The space is well suited to this kind of meal - having served as the home of Brass Taps for 30 years, the pub was a neighbourhood staple and community favourite hangout spot. With increased dining room size and bar space, El Charro Danforth will be able to welcome more diners to eat in the newly redecorated restaurant.

The classic antojitos are all still here at the Danforth location, with that El Charro touch. Crowd pleasers like burritos, tacos, chimichangas and enchiladas still fill the menu’s pages, and a selection of specialty margaritas to pair.

The new location of El Charro can be found at 493 Danforth Avenue in Toronto.
