New disco-themed ice cream cafe opens on Queen West

A brand new ice cream and cookie cafe has opened on Queen West, just in time for spring!

Disco Company officially opened its doors on March 15, 2023, at 1086 1/2 Queen St. W., surrounded by some of the city's coolest bars and restaurants.

When you walk into Disco Company, you'll notice that everything is disco-themed. From the neon red, cheeky sign that reads "IT'S NOT GONNA LICK ITSELF," to the disco balls and cloud decor hanging from the ceiling, to the laser lights, owners Ozzy Akkent and Gigi Yigit have created a fun slice of space that celebrates disco culture, clubs and festivals.

And, of course, serves homemade ice cream with all natural ingredients, and freshly baked cookies.

Akkent and Yigit are no strangers to the food industry. Akkent's career spans across hotels and restaurants on both the kitchen and service sides, while Yigit has worked in pastries and dessert shops. The couple's experience comes from their work in Turkey, France, and Canada.

"We’ve known each other for 13 years," said Akkent.

"We always dreamed of having our own little business. We both love to make ice cream and cookies. We also love disco culture and going to clubs and festivals so we came up with this idea and we decided to open our disco-themed ice cream and cookie shop."

Currently, Disco Company offers a range of flavours.

For ice cream, guests can choose from Madagascar vanilla, cookies and cream, pistachio, chocolate fudge brownie, Canadian double double, blueberry cheesecake, strawberry cream, and mango raspberry sorbet.

Cookies include chocolate chip, M&M, birthday cake, Easter, snickerdoodle, Reese’s Pieces, and toffee bits and white chocolate.

More flavours are on deck for the summer, too.

"We always loved having our friends over to our house, and cooking and baking for them," expresses Akkent. "We want to offer people our delicious sweets and be the coolest store in the city!"

Disco Company also sells merch at the front of the shop, such as disco ball cocktail cups, and its own disco-themed t-shirts.

Akkent notes that Disco Company will have later, extended hours for the summer, and keep the lights off while the disco balls and lasers shine, to give customers a total disco atmosphere, perfect for those late summer nights.

Disco Company is currently open from noon to 10 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays. Keep up with Disco Company on Instagram.
