New pop-up by team of Indonesian students sprouts at Square One

A new pop-up specializing in Indonesian comfort food has just opened inside the Food District at Square One Shopping Centre.

Sambal is starting their month-long venture out in the popular Mississauga shopping mall, and they're doing their own take on classic Indonesian dishes. Run by a team of Indonesian students and workers who adore food, they wanted to share their passion for Indonesian cuisine to the city. Prior to opening this pop-up, they were running weekly menu specials and delivering them at multiple drop off locations throughout the GTA. They finally found a temporary fixture where people could come see them at any time.

On the menu, you'll find classic dishes like Nasi Goreng, Soto Betawi and Beef Rendang. The Nasi Goreng is the Indonesian fried rice that they top with chicken, a sunny-side-up egg and tapioca cracker. The Soto Betawi is a Jakarta style beef soup made with AAA beef, melinjo crackers and sambal, that is served with rice. The Beef Rendang is their most popular dish and consists of a 48-hour slow-cooked beef stew that is simmered in traditional spices.

Sambal is located inside the District Kitchen at Square One's elevated food court experience, Food District. The pop-up will run all month long from Nov. 1 to 28. They will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. You can also pre-order in advance and they will still be doing catering requests as well.
