New sushi spot welcomed by former tenants on the Danforth

A new sushi restaurant has replaced a coveted Danforth diner, and is quickly becoming a local sensation.

Atto Sushi, who opened their doors on November 16, has been met with booming reviews and kind affirmations from the restaurant space’s previous tenant–the famed Hollandaise Diner, who sadly closed their doors in October 2020 after struggling to operate amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

A primary reason being the towering third-party delivery service fees, which could soon be capped by the provincial government, according to recent reports.

What this new sushi spot can look forward to is the outpour of support and business of the Danforth community, which is already taking shape.

Marisa Tran, co-owner of the now-shuttered Hollandaise Diner, uploaded a photo to the business’ Instagram welcoming the newcomer Atto Sushi to their former space.

“In Korean, Atto means present, or gift, and that’s exactly what Levi, Renzy and their family are bringing to our Danforth East neighbourhood,” Tran wrote in the caption. “... the gift of delicious new eats, new neighbours and more good vibes this winter!”

For Atto, they continue to weather the COVID storm––despite the setbacks countless small businesses are facing.

Recently, Atto Sushi shared they had fallen victim to a break-in at their store, which saw the loss of some cash and a broken window.

Chef Levi decided to stay resilient, poking fun at the unfortunate encounter in an Instagram post.

“At night there was a sushi lover who [couldn’t] wait [for] Levi’s Nine until [the] next day,” he wrote in the caption. It is a testament to the restaurant's optimism and faith in the community, noting that this is a "good sign for Atto's brilliant future."

Danforth locals and other business owners came to their side, offering support and consolation to Atto.

“Please, count on us for anything you need. We and the entire community is here to support you,” one user commented.

Atto Sushi is currently open and featuring a shortened a la carte menu to help manage their business as they settle in during Toronto's recent lockdown restrictions.

They are also offering a new grab and go system that introduces the restaurant’s bold flavours to those in a hurry.

Atto Sushi is located at 2231 Danforth Avenue in the deep east of Toronto.
