Popular doughnut shop becomes virtual cinema for a limited time

Glory Hole Doughnuts is one of Toronto's beloved doughnut shops and they have partnered with FilmsWeLike to support local cinema and streaming at home.  FilmsWeLike is a boutique distributor of documentary, independent and international films and was founded by award-winning documentary filmmaker Ron Mann.

Glory Hole Doughnuts will be streaming the film The Donut King in virtual cinema starting on November 19 through December 31. The film is available to stream virtually and can also be accessed in partnership with other local donut shops in and around Canada in cities like Calgary, Halifax, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Saskatoon.

The Donut King tells the unlikely story of a Cambodian refugee arriving in America in 1975 and building a multi-million-dollar empire baking America’s favourite pastry: the doughnut. Ted Ngoy (who the film is about) is one of fate, love, survival, hard knocks, and redemption...and doughnuts. It is a story of adventure as Ted goes from rags to riches escaping Cambodia as a refugee, arriving in America in 1975 and building an unlikely multi-million-dollar empire.

The film shows how Ted sponsors hundreds of visas for incoming refugees and helped them get on their feet, teaching them the ways of the doughnut business. By 1979, he was living the American dream, but this is not without great falls, trials and tribulations.

In recent times, people are looking for ways to entertain and share their art in the safest way possible and so virtual productions like these have become commonplace.

Under the direction of Alice Gu and screen writing by Gu and Carol Martori, The Donut King has won Special Jury Recognition for Achievement in Documentary Storytelling at SXSW 2020.

By purchasing a stream, you are supporting our local favourite Glory Hole Doughnuts, as well as indie theatres who have been greatly impacted by the current pandemic.
