Pow Wow Cafe reopens in Kensington Market for a pop-up today

One of Toronto’s most notable spots for Indigenous cuisine is popping up again today, May 13, and is serving up NDN tacos and their cult favourite scone dogs, from the heart of Kensington Market.

Pow Wow Cafe, a restaurant loved for its brunch menu featuring fry bread staples has been closed for the majority of the pandemic, with the exception of catering orders and the occasional takeout pop-up. This is partially due to chef and owner Shawn Adler focusing on kitchen creations at his other restaurant two hours away from Toronto, The Flying Chestnut Kitchen located in Eugenia, Ontario. There, Alder is open for takeout from Friday to Sunday with menus that change weekly.

On the menu for today are the restaurant’s highly sought after 'Scone Dogs' that made an appearance at their last pop-up in early April. These feature WoofDawg Hotdogs encased by a thick and crispy layer of fried bannock, accompanied by cedar mustard and raspberry ketchup.

Additionally, you can look forward to two options for their NDN tacos, which are finally making an appearance at one of their pop-ups. These feature a fry bread base and a traditional beef taco that’s topped with cumin sour cream, cheddar cheese, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and jalapeños, as well as a vegetarian option that is made with red lentil coconut curry and mango chutney on the menu.

Indigenous cuisine is undoubtedly largely underrepresented in Toronto’s food scene and Pow Wow Cafe being listed for sale despite a lease that ends in 2023 only highlights the importance of supporting local when you can. Definitely don't miss out on your chance to get your hands on Pow Wow Cafe's staple dishes.

Pow Wow Cafe will be opening from 1 p.m. until they sell out today, so you’ll want to secure your meal as soon as possible. Follow Pow Wow Cafe on Instagram to see when they'll be popping up next.
