Ruru Seichi is the ice cream-and-ramen collab we didn’t know we needed

East end’s hip ramen spot Oji Seichi is collaborating with Ruru Baked on a two-night dinner event featuring the best of this sweet and savoury partnership.

The idea to collaborate came from a Daily Hive video of actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan naming her favourite spots in the city, which included Oji Seichi and Ruru Baked.

“We saw the video of her talking about how she liked Oji Seichi and Ruru Baked and that inspired us to do this collab,” says Wilson Duong, co-owner at Oji Seichi.

Since the video was released in March, Duong has been working with Ruru Baked owner Luanne Ronquillo on a special event bringing together the unlikely duo of ramen and ice cream.

The Ruru Seichi Summmer ’22 dinner event will take place over two evenings in early August with a 3-course menu of refreshing, summery dishes.

“We really wanted to bring Toronto’s East and West communities together in a not-so-expected dinner collaboration," says Duong and Ronquillo.

To start, the "Summmer" Salad: a mix of tempura corn, radish, and zucchini with a charred pepper dressing. For the main course, Oji Seichi is cooking up a broth-less Black Garlic & Japanese Eggplant Mazemen that’s perfect for a summer evening. It’ll be made with smoked soy brisket, tomato, and scallion, with a vegetarian option to substitute the brisket with maitake mushroom.

Finally, for dessert, Ruru Baked is making an exclusive Sansho and Sour Plum Sundae with a “citrusy and slightly numbing” sansho pepper ice cream, topped with sour plum drizzle and milk powder crumble.

Even though the Ruru Seichi dinner event is already sold out, you can still pass by Oji Seichi on August 8 and 9 to take home your own pints of their special Sansho and Sour Plum ice cream. After that, the pints will be available from August 16 to 21 at Ruru Baked.
