This pop-up serves up bao out of a billiards lounge near Toronto

A new weekend pop-up serving baos and mantous is doing so out of a billiards lounge in Markham all summer.

Bao Babies is owned by two friends, Vanessa and Shirley, who decided to make use of the lockdown by making and selling Chinese-style gua baos.

As mentioned above, the speciality on their menu are Chinese gua baos––an increasingly popular bouncy dough traditionally stuffed with meat and fresh toppings. They offer three different kinds, like the spicy chicken, slow cooked beef shank and honey-soy glazed pork belly. Each gua bao is filled with cucumbers, pickled vegetables and stuffed with mouth-watering meats.

They also offer baozi, which is a large steamed bun that fully encases its filling in a fluffy white dough. You can get baozis stuffed with chive, cabbage and pickled cabbage with ground pork. They also offer a Vietnamese-inspired baozi, the Banh Bao, which they stuff with Chinese sausage, a quail egg, and ground pork.

For dessert, feel free to order their mantou, which is another fluffy steamed bun eaten across Asia. They do their mantous dessert style, with flavours like matcha green tea, black sesame and purple yam. They pair them with condensed milk for dipping to add that extra bit of sweetness.

You can find the Bao Babies pop-up inside Le Cue at 8901 Woodbine Avenue in Markham. The pop-up hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

They are currently taking walk-in orders as well as orders through Instagram and email. Delivery is also available for orders through Instagram.
