Vesuvio Pizzeria alumn opens new pizza joint that pays homage to the New York-style pizzeria

With over 15 years in the industry working alongside the crew at Toronto's beloved Vesuvio of 63 years, Juniors Pizza owner Shane Lemieux is no rookie in the pizza world. When the west end staple announced that they would be closing their doors in April, the longstanding pizzeria received an outpour of support and loyal customers waited in line for hours to get the last slice of nostalgia. Shane knew the customers would feel the same longing for good, New York-style pizza that he felt, and so he took his knowledge and some of his former colleagues, including the pizza-maker and opened up something of his own.

In 2005 at the age of 15 I applied for my first job. Little did I know at the time, I would spend the next 15 years of my life there. Working alongside some of my favourite people in the world in a place that felt like home to all of us. Vesuvio meant so much to the community. You walked around with an extra little bit of pride knowing how much those four walls meant to so many people. I would smile at each and every person who said to me “you know how long I’ve been coming here?”. It wasn’t just a restaurant to those people, it was their past. It reminded them of loved ones lost, or beautiful moments they had shared. I never took for granted the history that was made before I entered those doors and always did my best to instill those values in everyone who worked for us. That leads me to this man. Eddie, Ettore, Hector or Boss. The man of many names, but he would never forget a face. “That person used to come in, must be 50 years ago after the dance” he would say or “my god I haven’t seen you since 1967”. You would see the people light up each time. In a world where everyone is moving so fast all the time, he made time for everyone, including me. Whether it was sharing a coffee in the morning, or a pizza on a cold Monday evening. He taught me so many things, but first and foremost that being a good person comes first. I miss you everyday Eddie, even if you’re only a couple kilometres away. A day doesn’t go by without someone asking me how you’re doing. You made such an impression on everyone who met you. I just wanted to say I miss you, I love you and thank you. #pizzalife #torontopizza #juniorspizza #juniors #juniorspizzeria #juniorstoronto #itsbeenaslice #roncesvalles #thejunction #highpark #bloorwestvillage #vesuvio #beentheredundas #pepperonipizza

Opening a business is challenging, no matter the year or season, nonetheless during a pandemic. But Juniors, named after the Vesuvio neighbourhood pizza-maker legend, has already made a mark in the Roncesvalles food scene.

The team at Juniors has taken everything they learnt at Vesuvio's and put their own hearts into it. With a recipe so precious, 63 years in the making -- reproducing it is next to impossible. From the perfectly proofed dough to the natural, beautiful tomato sauce, Juniors produces a delicious product with light, pillowy texture and topped with the best quality ingredients.

They don't overcomplicate the traditional New York pie, but they do refine it. With pizzas like your Classic Cheese, Ettore's with anchovies, bacon, tomato and hot peppers, and a real favourite, the Boomshakalaka, topped with calabrese salami, hot capicollo, hot peppers, and chili oil, Juniors knows what they're doing. They also offer classic Caesar salads and some build-your-own pies.

Doing what they've done in such a short time is no small feat -- they've rehired eight Vesuvio employees who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic and have sold out completely in the first few weeks of opening. So make sure to order one of their pies before they're gone -- available through DoorDash or call directly to place your orders. Juniors is located at 2243 Dundas Street West and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 2 p.m. until late.
