Yorkville is getting a new basement bar with Korean-inspired cocktails

Known for their exquisite European-Korean dishes, 156 Cumberland has announced they’ll soon be revealing a cozy new bar right under their dining space.

Since opening in October 2020, the Yorkville restaurant has been wowing Toronto diners with their innovative menu combining Korean traditions with European flavours.

“Opening the bar was always in our minds,” says Jennifer Jeong, Front of House Manager at 156 Cumberland. “But with the pandemic and unpredictable future, we were waiting for the right moment.”

Located in the basement of their address, the new bar will be completely renovated to replace the outdated bar that the team had been using as their prep area.

Incorporating design ideas from the whole team, the final look-and-feel of the bar will make good use of the small space to create an intimate atmosphere with elevated design elements.

The team is still fleshing out their full cocktail menu with their bar manager, but visitors can expect a roster of Korean-inspired infusions, including one that pays homage to the Korean island of Jeju.

“Jeju is very famous for their tangerines,” says Jeong. “So we’ve incorporated this flavour—along with some others that are characteristic of Jeju—to create a very delicious and fun drink.”

Besides these exciting, new concoctions, they ultimately hope to create an easy-drinking menu that can feel approachable and inviting to every visitor, including a list of curated wines.

“We’re excited to finally have a pretty, functioning bar in the restaurant,” says Jeong. “The basement area has always been my least favourite part of the restaurant, so I’m especially excited for this opening!”

Slated to open by the end of the month, you’ll soon be able to try 156 Cumberland’s cocktails in Yorkville, at 156 Cumberland Street. Make sure to follow them on Instagram for more updates on their grand opening.
