Queen West moves at its own pace - part fashion strip, part art corridor, part neighbourhood main street. Between the galleries and the vintage shops, the food here tells the real story: small operations run by people who care about doing one thing exceptionally well. Whether it's a pot of jollof simmering over an open flame or nuts roasted in the front window, these are businesses built on craft and repetition. And with tools like Square behind the counter, they can keep their focus exactly where it belongs.

Coco Café
Tucked at 936 Queen West, Coco Cafe brings a taste of Trinidad to the strip - and the neighbourhood has taken notice. The menu centres on authentic Trinidadian cuisine, with doubles and flaky pastries leading the way, alongside chicken pies, empanadas, and a properly pulled espresso. Regulars are vocal about the doubles being among the best in the city, and the warm, unhurried energy of the room makes it easy to linger. It's the kind of spot that turns a first visit into a weekly habit. For a small kitchen balancing a steady stream of takeout orders and counter service, Square keeps things simple so the team can focus on the food.

Good Behaviour - Queen West
Good Behaviour started with chefs Michael Lam and Eric Chow, who turned to ice cream as a source of comfort and decided to bring their fine dining experience to the scoop shop format. The Queen West location at 335 - one of three in the city - pairs small-batch custard ice cream with gourmet sub sandwiches and fresh-baked cookies. Flavours lean creative, with Asian-inspired twists like afternoon tea and Vietnamese coffee, and the subs - smoked beef brisket, spicy meatball, roasted portobello - are far better than they have any right to be at an ice cream shop. With scoops, subs, and coffee all running through one counter, Square keeps the line moving from first cone to last.

Afrobeat Kitchen
Out at 1510 Queen West, Afrobeat Kitchen is chef-owner Victor Ugwueke's tribute to the Nigerian cooking he grew up on. He learned the recipes from his mother, a restaurateur back in Lagos, and has kept them faithful while building the dishes around locally sourced Canadian ingredients. The party jollof is the headliner - smoky, properly spiced, served with peppered chicken - but the buka beef, egusi, and 24-hour-marinated suya wings all have their devoted regulars, and the vegan side of the menu (the miso mafe especially) is no afterthought. Heat runs in three levels up to "Naija hot," the cocktails are poured with a heavy hand, and Afrobeats sets the tone in a room that's small, warm, and almost always full. Between a tight dine-in space, a busy bar, and a steady takeout and delivery business, Square keeps every order moving through one system so the kitchen can give its energy to the food.

The Roasted Nut
At 768 Queen West, The Roasted Nut has turned nut roasting into a bit of a spectacle - small-batch, dry-roasted nuts made right in the front window, with no added oils or unnecessary preservatives, so the flavour and crunch stay pure. The nut butter lattes are the thing people keep coming back for (the Pumpkin Cashew Butter version has its own cult following come fall), alongside nut butters, granola, and treats like the Caramel Pecan Cheesecake. The smell alone pulls people in off the street. Between the retail counter, the café orders, and a steady online and delivery business, Square lets the team run all of it through one system, so the focus stays on the roast.
